Romancing the stone

Stone is awesome.  That’s some seriously elemental shit – you go full caveman when you build something out of stone.  I have always found our front yard to be flat and dull and I want to throw up a wall so that there is an architectural feature and something to landscape against.  Being comfortable with a rustic effect, I thought that I should be able to do a bit of stone laying myself.

I’ve chosen to do a dry stone wall because no foundation is required below the frost line.  It will suffer the frost heaves of the winter without becoming cracked and ruined the way a mortared wall could.  If it does collapse in part, it is a snap to re-assemble (I theorize from the comfort of my living room).  The stone I’m using is  probably not most appropriate to dry stone wall building, but I do have some connection to it as it is from the stone foundation from 144 James Street North.  Indeed, a bit crap to work with, but I’m happy with the results so far. Wish me luck!
