About Lower City Joinery
We are a complete custom wood shop, and believe strongly that the best design considers the existing aesthetics of a space, its historical context, and the outlook of the client. Lower City Joinery does classical woodworking in a contemporary style that honours ideas of craft, craftsmanship, and materiality.
Owner Mike Kennedy started working wood as a way to do something concrete while studying philosophy at Concordia University in Montreal. On the face of it, these may seem like disparate fields, but he found that his study of philosophy has been a great influence on his approach to design and woodworking. In his process, consistency is king. The idea takes the lead and the execution must at every step be subordinate to the clear expression of that idea.
In 2004, Mike came to Toronto and started doing architectural millwork, including doors, windows, trim, and custom cabinetry. Over the next several years he developed advanced woodworking and design skills at some of Toronto’s premier architectural millwork shops doing work for universities, restaurants, and high-profile homes throughout South Western Ontario.
Today Mike maintains an active custom practice in Hamilton where he lives with his wife and three cats, idling actively through his organic vegetable garden through the summer, and brewing beer all the year round.
